Tanker pool player Heidmar has joined the marine fuels assurance consortium of Maritime Blockchain Labs, a subsidiary of Blockchain Labs for Open Collaboration.

Heidmar said it joined the group after establishing Heidmar Bunker Services to drive innovation and bring transparency around marine fuel quality traceability.

“We are excited to join a project group with a more pragmatic approach around the practical application of blockchain technology in the maritime and fuel industry,” said John Christakopoulos, Director of Commercial Projects.

Other consortium partners include Lloyd’s Register FOBAS, Precious Shipping, Bostomar Shipping, BIMCO, International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) and GoodFuels.  The objective of the pilot project is to utilize blockchain to provide traceability and an audible chain of custody on quality attributes and physical properties of marine fuel to combat fuel contamination purchases and to facilitate the transition to the IMO 2020 sulphur cap.
