Heidmar Runs to Support Seafarers

The very bedrock of our industry is the body of men and women who serve onboard the ships we trade. Working long, stressful and often dangerous hours at sea takes its toll on our crews and their families. In an effort to celebrate and support these seafarers, Heidmar sent two employees to the London Marathon to raise money and awareness for the charity that supports them in Britain, Seafarers UK.

Established a century ago, this wonderful organisation supports more than 170,000 people every year who have suffered physically or psychologically while serving at sea.

Heidmar trades around 90 tankers in its various pools and oversees the commercial operation of more than 2,000 sailors at any one time.

Running 42km in 30’c heat was, therefore, a small ask of our CEO, James Pippard, and our crude chartering manager, Angus Douglas, in the London Marathon.  More used to spending 4-5 hours “relationship-building” than running, it was fortunately something both were able to accomplish safely and without any embarrassing injuries.

Thanks to generous sponsorship from many participants in the tanker market, they were able to raise over £4,000 for Seafarers, a charity they are both extremely proud to represent. We all owe it to the people on the front line of the industry to show we understand and care about their lives, especially when things go wrong.  It is a comfort knowing Seafarers UK is there to help put things back on track.

James and Angus will next be seen in Lycra in the mountains of northern England, participating in the annual Seafarers UK 24 Peaks Challenge, which Heidmar will co-sponsor.
